HOUSING:

University Housing:

When most people think of Washington, DC, they don‘t immediately think of “College Town,” but it definitely is one!  Most of the college campuses in around Washington, DC offer up their dorm and apartments to visiting interns.  This is a great way to meet other students from across the country, especially if you are venturing out to the city on your own!

Look for our Washington Insider Tips for helpful information or personal experience with the housing options listed below.

Georgetown Main Campus:  http://housing.georgetown.edu/summer/

Washington Insider Tip: Though Georgetown University’s main campus is well taken care of and in a safe area, it is far away from the metro system.  The university does, however, provide a regular shuttle to and from the metro.  The campus is also near a popular shopping and bar scene.

Georgetown Law:  http://www.law.georgetown.edu/reslife/summer/index.html

Washington Insider Tip: The Georgetown Law center is not located on near Georgetown’s main campus.  It is located extremely close to Union Station (metro and train station) and is a close walking distance to the Senate and House of Representatives.  This is a great option for those working on Capitol Hill.

George Mason: http://housing.gmu.edu/summer/intern/

Washington Insider Tip: This university campus is located OUTSIDE of Washington, DC in Northern Virginia.  Though there is regular bus service, it is not within walking distance to the metro.  This may be ideal for a student with access to a car or who is working in Northern Virginia.  Check out transportation options before staying here!

American: http://www.american.edu/ocl/housing/summer_housing_conferences/intern_housing.html

Washington Insider Tip: Located in Northern DC, this campus has housing that is within walking distance of the metro.  For those working on Capitol Hill, this metro ride will be approximately forty five minutes.

George Washington:  http://gwired.gwu.edu/gwhousing/summerhousing/interns/

Washington Insider Tip:  This college campus is located in the center of Washington, DC.  Its location is convenient for those on foot as many amenities are located nearby, including grocery shops and the metro.  It is walking distance to downtown, Georgetown, and the National Mall.

Government internships:  http://career.ucsd.edu/sa/GovInternship.shtml  or http://www.studentjobs.gov/e-scholar.asp

Washington Insider Tip:  Though this site requires a little research and time, it is an extremely useful resource for jobs not on Capitol Hill.  Internships within a government agency could be politically related, or not at all.  For example, the Department of Agriculture could be perfect for a business/accounting major as they give out a lot of grants or the EPA could provide an invaluable experience for an environmental science major.
