Online links- please include a description

  • Hill Zoo is a general job/housing/classified site specifically for jobs "on the hill" - typically meaning jobs/internships with elected officials.  www.Hillzoo.com

  • Students looking for general Internships with different areas of the Federal Government in DC can find a lot of great leads either on the Federal Site here or the one set up by Congressman Watt's Office here
  • http://www.internships-usa.com/Cong01/cong0506.htm -- Congressional internships guidebook for each office- ***Student should note that one of the best options is to first look in his or her own congressional district or to make contact with anyone they know in a congressional office.

  • http://www.whitehouse.gov/government/wh-intern.html -- White House internships.  These are extremely competitive and having a recommendation from someone who works with the white house frequently is helpful- ask DC Alumni association for recommendations.  Beyond the Whitehouse, each executive branch in DC (ie. Dept. of Commerce, Dept. of Treasury, Homeland security) has a small portion of employees who are "administration employees"-- politicall appointees-- and not bureaucrats and these offices are also in need to internships.

  • Idealist -- Idealist is a great source of nonprofit jobs in several US cities and around the world. A number of DC based organizations post volunteer opportunities, internships and jobs here. You can customize your experience, including email updates tailored to your area (substantive or geographic) of interest. Don't just email your resume though. Call to follow-up. Show you are passionate about the work you want to do.

  • Presidential campaigns - be sure to look up campaigns, they will be in need of help during this Winter Break.  The Iowa Caucuses are on January 3rd, 2008.  Spending any available time (whether it be a weekend or a month) helping out can put you in touch with the campaign/political network that can help you make the next step to DC.  Westminster currently has 2 recent alumni working on a Presidential Campaign in Iowa. (Ben Young '04 - youngbbe3@gmail.com.  And Brad Main '07)

Presidential Campaigns will also be seeking Interns for Summer 2008 and Fall 2008.  You can contact the Missouri Democratic Party or Missouri GOP, or the campaigns directly, for more information.

General Ideas

  • If you want to be involved in the financial world, DC provides a lot of opportunity that other cities are not able to provide.  Most large financial institutions in the large cities hire from certain schools or hire on a already-know basis.  The financial world is more approachable in DC and the experience will still help tremendously in future job searches.
